Racing Post teams up with Punchestown for Champion Bumper
Punchestown racecourse today announced that the Racing Post is to be the new sponsor of the €100,000 Champion INH Flat race at this year’s Festival.
The Grade 1 Racing Post Champion INH Flat race is a key race on day two of the climactic five-day event. Champion trainer Willie Mullins will bid for his fourth consecutive and eighth overall win in the race and, with a €100,000 purse on offer, the outcome may well play a role in his thrilling battle with Gordon Elliott for the trainers' title.
Paul Byrne, Commercial Manager of the Racing Post's Irish Division said: "The Racing Post is delighted to sponsor the Grade 1 Champion Bumper at this year's Festival. Racing Post has a great affinity with Punchestown having sponsored at the Festival for the past six years, and now holds commercial partnerships with 24 Irish racecourses. With both the Champion Trainer and Champion Amateur Rider titles set to go down to the wire, the Racing Post bumper could prove absolutely pivotal in deciding the winner of both championships."
Long-time supporters of Irish jump racing's showpiece finale, the Racing Post has previously sponsored the champion hunters steeplechase and in 2014 was the feature sponsor on Ladies' Day with the Racing Post Champion Hurdle.
Punchestown's Racing Manager Richie Galway commented of the announcement: “The Racing Post has been a great supporter of Punchestown over the years and we are delighted to see the company back sponsoring a Grade 1 at the Festival. Willie Mullins has dominated what is now the Racing Post Champion Bumper and, with the trainers' title boiling right down to the end of the season, I have no doubt he will be giving this race his best shot once again”.
The Racing Post Champion INH Flat race is the only Grade 1 contest at the Punchestown Festival that does not operate under the early closing policy. Entries for the 2017 renewal will close and be announced on Wednesday 20th April.
