Attendances soar on Ladies Day at the Punchestown Festival as the sun sets on Katie Walsh’s career as a lady jockey

33,082 attended Ladies Day at Punchestown today a remarkable 3,019 up on the Friday meeting last year. This makes the overall attendance for the 2018 festival so far at 91,541 with another day to go.

Here are some of the highlights of the penultimate day of the 2018 Punchestown Festival:

Katie Walsh officially hung up her boots following a savage drive on the Willie Mullins trained Antey in the colours of Rich Ricci beating Shady Operator by a nose in what was regarded by many pundits as the ride of the week!

Supasundae took the Grade 1 BETDAQ 2% Commission Champion Hurdle after a dramatic series of events three from home when favourites Melon and Samcro hit the deck.

Mrs. Rose Loxton carried the flag for the UK visitors training the first UK winner of the week when Caid Du Berlais won The Star Best for Racing Coverage Champion Hunters chase by a country mile.

An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar who attended Punchestown today commented “The Punchestown Festival is a real highlight and a fantastic social occasion. It's yet more evidence of how important racing is to Ireland and our economy. There is a real sense of a festival here, a buzz and a positive energy. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my visit as always. The Irish are world leaders at racing, and festivals like Punchestown really capture its spirit."

The Bollinger Best Dressed Lady Competition was won by Eimear Cassidy from Droghea wearing a dress she bought in a boutique in the USA teamed with Penneys shoes which she customised by adding pearls and a floral detail. She wore this with a Burberry clutch which she got for her 21st Birthday and a Suzanne Ryan Millenary hat which she also customised with floral detail this morning.
