Pigsback Honour Former Employee Nick Coen with Punchestown Festival Race
Punchestown Racecourse today announced that Pigsback.com will sponsor a memorial race in honour of their former employee Nick Coen who sadly passed away earlier this year.
The Pigsback.com Nick Coen Memorial Handicap Steeplechase will take place on Thursday 27th April and is a fitting tribute to a young man who was a massive supporter of racing and a regular at Punchestown and indeed many tracks in Ireland. Nick, who sadly passed away in February of this year at just 33 years of age was very popular with the racing fraternity and could be found outside the weighroom chatting with trainers, owners and jockeys alike. An extremely knowledgeable racing enthusiast and honorary member at Punchestown, Nick had a commercial mind and a quick wit and negotiated sponsorship of his wheelchair with business people involved in racing.
Michael O’Dwyer of Pigsback.com recognised Nick’s love of the racing game and felt that a memorial race would be a fitting tribute to a young man who had worked with his company for eight years. Commenting on the memorial race Michael O’Dwyer said "Nick just loved racing and was embraced by the racing community. He loved Punchestown. So to celebrate his life with a race sponsorship at the Punchestown Festival is ideal. I've no doubt he'd give it the thumbs up and one of his big beaming smiles."
Dick O’ Sullivan, Punchestown General Manager spoke about the gesture by saying “It was very rare we would have a race day here and Nick wouldn’t be in attendance. I really admired his spirit and how he would chat away with the big racing names and the young newcomers alike. He will be sadly missed by all the team at Punchestown”.
The 2017 Punchestown Festival takes place from Tuesday 25th to Saturday 29th April. Tickets from €25pp and hospitality from €99pp along with full event details available from www.punchestown.com or call +353 (0)45 897704.
